Parvimonas micra is a rare cause of spondylodiscitis. Nevertheless, recent dental procedures with subsequent back pain should lead to the consideration of possible anaerobic causes of spondylodiscitis. Heightened awareness of this pathogen and improvements in diagnostic methods might lead to higher detection rates.
Changes were evaluated over 10 years in the in vitro resistance of human periodontopathic strains of Parvimonas micra to four antibiotics. Subgingival biofilms culture positive for P. micra from 300 United States adults with severe periodontitis in 2006, and from a similar group of 300 patients in 2016, were plated onto anaerobically incubated enriched Brucella blood agar alone, or
Parvimonas micra is a fastidious, anaerobic, gram positive coccus, which is found in normal human oral and gastrointestinal flora. It has also been known as Peptostreptococcus micros and Micromonas micros with its most recent re-classification in 2006. It has been described in association with hematogenous seeding of prosthetic joints [1,2]. Parvimonas micra is a Gram positive anaerobic coccus which is frequently isolated from dental plaque in patients with chronic periodontitis. It is the only species in its genus, and is a common constituent of mixed anaerobic infections such as intra-abdominal abscess. Fusobacterium nucleatum, Parvimonas micra and Porphyromonas endodontalis were the most frequently found isolates, along with other taxa including newly named species (Prevotella baroniae and Dialister invisus) and as yet uncultivated phylotypes of Bacteroidetes.

The bacterium is an obligate anaerobe and was first identified and classified in 1933 as Peptostreptococcus micros [3, 5]. Synonym i. 2019-09-12 · Parvimonas micra is frequently isolated from lesions of apical periodontitis and is a major disease-related pathogen. One of the main causes of apical periodontitis is extraradicular biofilm. In this study, we investigated polymicrobial biofilm formation by P. micra and species associated with apical periodontitis.
